When you’re in the market to find the right security alarm system, the sheer number of options can be overwhelming. The first decision most people face is: should I get a wired security system or a wireless security system?

Unfortunately, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. Everyone has unique needs when it comes to home security. Your ideal system might look completely different to somebody else’s. Let’s consider some of the key differences between the two options.

Wireless systems are easier to install. Wired systems need to be manually connected to your home’s electrical wiring. Similarly, Wireless security systems can often be taken with you if you move. Whilst it’s not impossible to remove a hard wired security alarm, it’s not generally recommended.

Whilst a hard wired alarm system can be a larger initial investment, you won’t have the on going costs for battery replacement which you will incur with wireless alarm systems. Wired alarms have a battery back up with allws them to run even during a power outage, however this should last for 2 years at least.

Because wired alarm systems don’t rely on wireless internet, they can still operate if your internet signal is interrupted. A wireless system however will generally not work if your Wi-Fi router is down, and the signals travel slower than they do on a wired alarm system.

Historically, wireless security alarms had the clear advantage of being able to be monitored and managed remotely. These days however, most hardwired systems have wireless capability.

Wired security alarms are ideal for homeowners and sites that have clear ceiling access to enable cabling to be run to all devices. Wireless security alarms are beneficial for renters or those who have no or minimal ceiling cavity to run cables.

The best choice for you will depend on a number of factors, and if your situation requires a little of both, that’s no problem either. If your property has locations which are hard-to-reach for devices with cable, installing a wired system with a combination of wired and wireless motion sensors is also an option.
