There’s nothing quite like a Perth summer. Air conditioning is a must have, there’s no doubt about that. But, air conditioning isn’t the only way to find relief from Perth’s summer heat. Our handy tips will help you keep cool and reduce your electricity bill.
Keep it shut
The easist way to cool your home is to keep curtians and windows closed in the hest of the day. When the Fremantle doctor comes in and the sun goes down, open everything up to the cool air. Consider investing in block out curtains, they’ll help keep your house cooler in summer and warmer in winter. If you don’t need to use rooms that tend to heat up the most, keep these areas closed off to prevent them heating up the whole house.
Throw some shade
North and west-facing windows can let a lot of heat into your home or officre. Provide some shade with awnings, pergolas or some greenery. Deciduous tirees or vines are an especially good choice, they give you the shadeyou want in summer but in winter they let much wanted sunlight in.
Be a fan of fans
Ceiling fans cost very little to run and can do a great job of cooling your house. It’s important to note though, that the direction the blades turn makes a difference to how fans work. Ceiling fans must spin counter clockwise to create a breeze and cool your home. If you’re not feeling a breeze, your fan might be turning in the wrong direction!
Have it both ways
Don’t think that you need to choose between using your air conditioner or using fans. Supplement your air conditioning with fans, they’re much cheaper to run and can allow you to turn your thermostat up a few degrees
Turn it up
We may want to turn the thermostat right down just to get some reprieve on those sweltering days. However, if you keep the temperature at 24°, your home will be comfortable and your wallet will be thankful. And every degree makes a difference, just 1° lower and you could add up to 15% to your electricity bill.
Take it outside
Not that we need another reason to love our BBQs, but, they can help you save money by allowing you to cook outside and keep the temperature down inside the house. If the BBQ isn’t an option for you, all is not lost. Make the most of your microwave, slow cooker or air fryer. Anything you can do to avoid turning your oven on will help keep your house cooler.
Insulate mate
Ceiling insulation will keep your house comfortable year round. And whilst it might be a bigger investment, the 45% reduction in your electricity costs means insulation will pay for itself in no time.
